Ombudsman Complaints in India: Jurisdiction, Limits, and a Winning Case

By Hari Kotian, IRDAI-Certified Insurance Advisor · 2026

Filled complaint form, policy copy, premium proof, claim documents, the rejection letter or final reply, all correspondence, and ID plus address proof.

Eligibility

Individual policyholders, claims within the award limits (up to Rs 50 lakh for life), a prior complaint to the insurer with no resolution in 30 days or an unsatisfactory reply, and filing within one year of the insurer's final reply.

Limits

The Ombudsman cannot award punitive damages beyond policy terms, requires the insurer complaint first, and is not a court - complex fraud or over-limit claims belong in consumer forums.

Process and timeline

Acknowledgment in 3-5 working days, a mediation attempt within 1 month, and an award within 3 months. The policyholder may accept or reject the award and pursue courts.
